Abstract
Summary form only given. The physics, design principles, and implementing technologies of quasi three level (Q3L) diode pumped solid state lasers (DPSSLs) (Yb:YAG, Tm:YAG, Ho:YAG) are outlined, using Yb:YAG as the defining example. Three distinct Yb:YAG DPSSL architectures are in development: the axially pumped active thin disk, the transversely pumped multipass rod, and the end-pumped rod or zig-zag slab.
