Abstract
Summary form only given. We evaluate the maximum bit rates achievable in communication links made by using dispersion-varying fibers and parametric amplifiers by fixing the total allowed shift of group-velocity dispersion (GVD) per stage at -0.02 ps/sup 2//km. Variation of GVD beyond this value results in distortion of the solitons. The optical phase conjugation occurring within the parametric amplifiers prevents the collision of soliton by periodically inverting their relative motion.
