Abstract
We have developed a novel current mode multi-level simultaneous bidirectional I/O scheme for high throughput chip-to-chip communications. Data are represented by multi-level currents on the transmission line instead of multi-level voltages. The current mode scheme consumes less power and is faster by reducing the voltage swing on the transmission line. Simulations based on 0.18 μm CMOS SPICE parameters show that the data rate is as high as 4 Gb/s/pin, and the power consumption is only 34 mW.
