Abstract
Summary form only given. The proposed approach of "atom to application" will involve: precision laser spectroscopy to probe the atomic/molecular information during the process; modeling of process transport phenomena and thermodynamics for quantitative understanding; modeling and measurement of properties of laser processed materials; and integration of knowledge from modeling and sensors with artificial intelligence and control theory to create smart, flexible, thinking systems for manufacturing.
