Abstract
Summary form only given. The output characteristics of recently discovered quantum cascade lasers (QCL) are rapidly improving. The pace of progress suggests an enormous potential for improvement of QCL performance, based on the very physics of these lasers. Here we estimate the limitations of QCL for high-temperature operation. Our calculations are based on the recent theory of the lineshape and the gain spectra in intersubband lasers.
