Summary form only given. Compact and flexible laser sources capable of generating high-power picosecond return-to-zero (RZ) data pulses are desirable in applications such as wideband pulse generation using photoconductive switching, optical communications, and optically controlled RF communications. In this paper, we describe a novel method of direct generation of /spl sim/1 W peak power, 25-30 picosecond RZ data pulses from a Q-switched three-section laser diode.
