Abstract
Summary form only given. This paper deals with the latest achievements on high-power, room-temperature operation of CO laser, which has long been thought as the breakthrough for the practical industrial applications of CO laser such as laser beam welding. Both a transverse-flow and a fast-axial-flow rf-discharge-excited CO lasers are now being optimized for room temperature operation. A steady output of more than 1 kW is achieved under nonoptimized conditions. Future outlook of the CO laser is also given.
