Abstract :
European projects concerning the use of microwave techniques to facilitate control and management of road traffic are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the DRIVE (Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe) initiative. This project involves control of and assistance to traffic using road traffic informatics (RTI) systems of intelligent vehicle/highway systems (IVHS). This includes route guidance, road pricing, incident detection, and other facilities designed to ease the path of the driver and increase the capacity of the existing structures while making travelling safer.<>
