Abstract
Summary form only given. A fundamentally novel concept of the undulator-free free-electron laser, "resotron", in which the lasing at optical wavelengths is possible using high current low-voltage accelerators as drivers is proposed. The lasing scheme is based on the effect of amplification of electromagnetic wave by magnetically guided electron beam near the surface of absorbing material (i.e., of complex dielectric susceptibility /spl epsiv/). The resotron oscillation frequency is then fixed by the material absorption band, Im /spl epsiv/(/spl omega/)>0.
