  • Abstract
Summary form only given. The metropolitan network can be described from a transmission point of view by short distances, and amount of wavelength limited by the fiber-rich infrastructure. However, the metropolitan area is where the broadband scenario will evolve first. It is also characterized from the capacity demand, by dynamical changes in time and region. A high-capacity reconfigurable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network could enhance the infrastructure flexibility to support higher utilization and ease the migration of the network during a penetration growth of broadband services.
