Abstract :
Summary form only given. Fiber ring lasers with an erbium-doped segment of amplifying fiber can be mode-locked using polarization-additive pulse mode-locking (P-APM). The mode-locking process is via the optical Kerr-effect-induced polarization rotation of an elliptically polarized mode in the fiber. The elliptic polarization is produced by "rabbit-ear" fiber polarization controllers. Thus, the same fiber can be employed for the amplifying process and the mode-locking process, leading to a compact and environmentally stable laser design.
