Abstract :
The design and construction of a custom microprocessor-based data and control module used in a remote subsea sensing application are described. The fundamental research objective was to collect data remotely at various ocean depths with hardware configured as an average cosine meter (ACM). The hardware, installed in a high pressure housing, collects data used in measuring the concentration of phytoplankton at various ocean depths. The device is designed to drift from the research vessel and begin sampling prior to and during its descent. The device is a microprocessor-controlled instrument containing two shuttered photodiode light sensors, a pressure sensor, and an internal temperature sensor
