  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. A real-time 100 x 100 element liquid crystal television display has been constructed using SOS technology. Previous work at Hughes, resulting in a liquid crystal TV display was described at last year´s conference. The present investigation extends this concept to a potentially more practical and useful approach with SOS. A simple six-mask, silicon gate, P-MOS process is used to make the one-transistor, one-capacitor cell matrix which controls and stores the video information at each spot of the display. The advantages of SOS for such large area circuits are 1) good isolation to prevent crosstalk, 2) simple process steps, 3) small address-line overlap areas to reduce pinhole sensitivity, and 4) a transparent substrate allowing use of back lighted liquid crystal displays. The present unit is compatible with the four normal LC display modes. Reflective mode dynamic scattering is used for simplicity. A description of the operating principle, the processing steps, and the testing method will be presented along with display pictures. Some of the problems associated with making very large area MOS circuits will also be discussed.
