Abstract :
The factors in parallel communications which can improve network performance are identified. Considering the IEEE token ring protocol as the basis for parallelization, the authors develop simulation models for parallel multiple token rings. Simulation is conducted at 100 Mbit/s and 1 GBit/s rates. The authors then compare the performance of 100 Mbit/s parallel multiple token rings and standard FDDI. An attempt is also made to introduce mechanisms to distribute and control tokens among parallel rings to achieve a high level of performance characteristics. Finally, the benefits and limitations of parallel networks for high data rate systems are discussed
