Abstract
An environment for prototyping operator interface subsystems is described. The design is driven by both the requirements of the overall system and the capabilities, experience, and training of the operators. Rapid prototyping of the hardware and software for these subsystems produces a proof-of-concept model of the fielded operator interface subsystem. This provides a platform for performing concept tests that determine the feasibility and performance of various configurations quickly, create an environment for efficient testing of the human factors implications of various configurations, and facilitate rapid responses to changing customer requirements. Prototyping provides a means of incrementally testing and reevaluating design decisions, thus reducing the time spent pursuing deficient and costly alternatives. Rapid prototyping is supported in the laboratory through a suite of off-the-shelf computer platforms, display devices, and input devices; a flexible foundation of system software and software tools; and human factors usability testing
