Abstract
In order to reap the benefits of good software engineering practices throughout the NETHELP System Diagnostic Advisor, a model based on parallel classes combined with a technique for manipulating lists was developed. This model evolved from thinking about the diagnostic problem as a problem in mathematics. Developing `real-world´ knowledge bases utilizing this model has resulted in knowledge bases that are understandable, readable, and easily maintained. The method developed can be utilized to diagnose faults in a large class of systems having from a few dozen to a few hundred items, each with a few dozen to a few hundred possible problems
