Abstract
Recently, much attention has been focused on improving the thermal/structural integrity of traveling wave tubes (TWTs). Increased reliability of TWTs can be achieved when careful consideration is given to design requirements and constraints, material selection, weight reduction, and cost effectiveness. An analytical model should be developed early in the design phase to evaluate the feasibility of various concepts. This paper shows that a model can be formulated using the finite element method, implemented by widely available general-purpose computer codes. Results from the model can alert the designer to locations of high temperatures or severe stress concentrations, before a failure occurs in prototype testing or tube operation.
