Abstract :
A numerical simulator capable of predicting induced voltages of overhead wires is developed. This simulator is divided into three parts. The first calculates the lightning return stroke between cloud and ground, the second obtains the electromagnetic fields generated, and the last simulates a transmission line. A model of the whole system is presented: the source, the propagation, and the victim of the electromagnetic wave are taken into account. The lightning channel is assumed to be a vertical and straight transmission line and initially charged from cloud to the attachment point. The channel´s corona sheath, a nonlinear resistance and a nonuniform parameter distribution are also considered. The model of the cloud includes the losses and charges. The earth is a lumped resistance. The victim transmission line is a lossy overhead wire parallel to ground with terminations at each end. The line induced voltage is predicted by knowing the electromagnetic fields along the line
