Abstract :
Summary form only given. The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and ultraviolet (UV) absorption and excitation spectroscopic features of the Tb/sup 3+/ ion in LiLuF/sub 4/ crystal hosts are due to transitions between the levels of 4f/sup 8/ single configuration and the levels of 4f 5d mixed configuration (where a 4f electron is promoted to a 5d localized band). These transitions with strong Frank-Condon factors are responsible for the observed broad band spectra of the Tb/sup 3+/ ion when it is excited by coherent radiation from the pulsed discharge molecular fluorine laser at 157 nm.
