Abstract
Progress in optical technology pertinent to problems of interconnecting electronic circuits is reviewed. The nature of the electronic communication problem at the chip and board level is described, the advantages of optics and optoelectronics in addressing these problems is discussed and recent experimental results, both for advanced optoelectronic devices and optical interconnect demonstrations, is summarized.
