Abstract :
Although of practical importance to managing large IP networks, measurement-based network monitoring using distributed monitors has not been rigorously formulated nor investigated. This work develops a missing data framework for distributed monitoring based on multicast, and investigates, through density estimation, how resources needed for network monitoring scale with the size of the network under various network (loss) conditions. The results on the scalability provide insights into feasibility of using only edge monitors, and provide design guidelines for future network management systems
