Abstract
The author believes that the greatest potential danger for industries who use electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres, is the ignorance of installation personnel. The author presents examples which support this view, based on extensive experience of on-site inspection and audits of explosion protected electrical equipment, during which numerous items of equipment have been found in an unsafe condition. In nearly every instance, the danger could have been avoided if the installer or maintainer had had the most basic understanding of safety features incorporated in the equipment
