Abstract :
This case study details a project that is currently on going to develop a software solution that utilizes the latest PC based and Internet technologies to replace a specific utility´s existing and outdated PC based substation human machine interface (HMI) system. Key focuses of this project include: providing equivalent functionality of the existing substation HMI system; providing a solution that is easy to configure, use and maintain; providing advanced Intranet functionality utilizing the latest Internet technologies; maintaining a separation between mission critical substation protection and control functionality (provided by relays and RTUs) and the substation HMI system; and providing a product that can be the foundation for the utility to develop extremely powerful yet cost effective real-time enterprise solutions
