Abstract :
A geometrical model of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) develops the PMD dynamical equations from first principles instead of phenomenologically and is extensible to polarization dependent loss. The utility of the geometrical approach is demonstrated by analyzing a fiber model with retarder plates forming a Markov process.
