Abstract
With the accelerating transition of applications from legacy communication networks towards packet-switched and especially IP-based networks grows the need to provide hard guarantees of availability and reliability of these critical information infrastructures. Over the past decade, a variety of initiatives have been launched to develop, implement and evaluate theories and methods for building resilient IP communication networks, yet at this stage designers are frequently unable to make as hard availability and resilience guarantees for this new type of infrastructure as for the ones they replaced. This paper discusses 7 fundamental challenges when addressed should improve the state of the art in effective resilience engineering.
