The objective of conceptual design is to find a feasible physical structure which can realize the required function. During this process, it is often necessary to exploit the behaviors of the product being designed. As such, it is important to investigate the characteristics of the product behavior. In this paper, we take the assembly devices as the cases for mechatronic product design. By studying the behaviors exhibited by these products, we noticed the so-called “phenyl-loop behaviors”, which demonstrated some unique characteristics worthwhile for further study. Some specific rules are proposed to help identify these behaviors and their usefulness for conceptual design are also discussed, including functional integration, guidelines for design refinement, etc.
