Abstract
This paper investigates a basic matix converter and outlines how it could be used in renewable energy applications. The main focus of the paper is the description of how it works and how simple PWM control can be implemented. The simulation is conducted using the simulation package Portunus and full details are given about the circuit simulation developed under a range loads and frequencies. The advantages of this converter is the absence of a DC link and flexibility of the control - the converter allows power to be transmitted in either direction with any power factor.
