Abstract :
The desire for lower vehicle emissions combined with better fuel economy and enhanced safety and ride features have led to an increasing use of electronic systems on nearly all classes of road vehicles. This widespread use of on-board electronics combined with the greater use of in-vehicle communication networks has exacerbated the problems of locating and rectifying faults on vehicle systems. Concerns within the automotive industry were being expressed that these trends would compound the complexity of diagnostics on vehicles if suitable standards were not in place. Standardisation is likely to play a key part in these new systems becoming acceptable to both the driving public and the law makers. This paper reports on the results of the ISO (International Standards Organisation) Diagnostic Requirements Survey carried out by Task Force 2 of the Serial Data Communications Working Group (ISO/TC22/SC3/WG1). The paper describes the background and history of the Task Force and gives an initial analysis of the survey responses received to date
