Abstract
Outage probabilities for CDMA hard and soft handoffs are derived to compare their cell coverage areas. Rayleigh fading and log-normal shadowing are included in the propagation model. Signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is used to compute the outage probabilities for any mobile location distributions. In the soft handoff system, mobiles choose the base station with the least attenuation among nearest neighbors. Coverage areas for reverse and forward links and different diversity combining techniques are considered
