Abstract :
A robust 40 Gbit/s TDM transmitter/receiver pair based on optical multiplexing/demultiplexing has been implemented for optical transmission evaluation. Back-to-back receiver sensitivities from -29.0 to -26.5 dBm were achieved and Q factors in excess of 18 (or one error in 1053 years). With 560 km of dispersion-shifted fibre (DSF), system Q factors in excess of 8 (BER of 6.3×10-16) were maintained over a signal wavelength range of 2.5 nm
