Abstract
Coordinated control of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system in Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of an interconnected two area multi-source power generation system is presented in this paper. The proposed method can improve the dynamic performance of Automatic Generation Control after the sudden load perturbation. The integral gains of the AGC are obtained by tuning the quadratic performance index using Integral Squared Error (ISE) technique. The time domain simulations are carried out on a two area multi-unit multi-source power system considering hydro-thermal-gas power plants. The analysis reveals that SMES can effectively damp out the deviations in area frequencies and tie-line power flow with better transient performance and faster settling time than without any energy storage devices.
