Abstract :
Coordinated control of Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifter (TCPS) and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system in Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of an interconnected two area thermal system is presented in this paper. The proposed TCPS-SMES combination can improve the dynamic system performance of Automatic Generation Control of an interconnected system after the sudden load perturbation. The integral gains of AGC are obtained by tuning the quadratic performance index using Integral Squared Error (ISE) technique. The time domain simulations are carried out on a two area multi-unit thermal power system. The analysis reveals that SMES-TCPS combination can effectively damp out the deviations in area frequencies and tie-line power flow with better transient performance and faster settling time than that of without TCPS-SMES combination.
