Abstract :
An optically preamplified pulse position modulation (PPM) system is analysed and shown to offer a sensitivity benefit of 7.9 dB over an equivalent PCM system. The PPM system self-synchronisation is addressed and the jitter sensitivity penalty is evaluated. The results indicated that the penalty can be as high at 15 dB. An optimal presynchronisation filter is derived and results are presented demonstrating that the jitter sensitivity penalty has been limited to about 1 dB when the filter is included while utilising the same set of system parameters
