Abstract :
With the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) into many aspects of our lives, there is a rising need for spatial standards for IoT to provide location-based services. Objects on IoT contain technology that allows them to interact and connect with our natural and built environments, and the binding factor of these things to the real world depends heavily on open spatial standards. In this paper, we will discuss how vital spatial standards are for IoT with the demonstrated growth it has experienced, and how the standards are still developing in the attempt to catch up with the growth. We will provide an overview of spatial communication methods and the need for standardization with the technologies, which is important for location-based services, followed by elaborating on the different categories of spatial localization algorithms. Finally, examples will be provided to show how spatial standards are trending in IoT applications.
