Abstract
Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna (RDRA) for wideband and high gain applications is proposed. Self similar and space filling property of fractal is exploited to improve impedance bandwidth while gain is improved by drilling array of symmetrical slots. The magnetic surface current distribution is shown to validate gain improvement. The dielectric material used is Rogers 6010 having a dielectric constant of εn =10.2 and loss tangent of tanδ=0.0023. The proposed fractal RDRA offers an impedance bandwidth of 2.4 GHz (∼ 64.86%) for S11 < −10 dB. Maximum gain obtained is 7.2 dBi with the stable radiation patterns. Two antenna prototypes, with slots and without slots; are fabricated and experimentally verified. The proposed fractal RDRA finds application in different wireless communication systems such as WiMAX (3.4 – 3.7 GHz) and WLAN (5.15 – 5.35 GHz).
