Abstract
The ion charge state distribution of vacuum arc plasma depends on its arc operating (“burning”) voltage. Increase of the arc operating voltage leads to dissipation of more energy in the collisional cathode-spot plasma and as a result the average ion charge state increases. One way of increasing the arc voltage is to superimpose current spikes on the arc current. The influence of single, double, and multiple current spikes on the charge state distribution has been investigated for various cathode materials
