Abstract :
The design of a man-made noise measuring receiver built by utilizing commercially available equipment is described. Antenna factors for the measurement frequencies were calculated from the antenna calibration data, and also the equation for the external antenna noise figure were provided. Two methods used to calculate the average noise power are presented. In the first method average noise powers were calculated by using the recorded envelope waveform of the received noise together with calibration data. In the second method the average noise power was calculated from the measured noise amplitude distribution (NAD). It was concluded that results obtained from both methods are in good agreement and that the second method is more accurate for antenna noise temperatures less than the reference temperature. It was decided to select the outside-building environments with respect to the vehicle concentration since the dominant man-made noise is expected to be generated by automobile ignition systems. Inside-building environments were selected with respect to typical working and domestic environments
