Abstract :
Third generation multimedia mobile applications will put a high emphasis on interactivity and on-demand usage, which is assumed to be the central capability of point-to-point telecommunication networks. However, considering the technical and marketing issues of delivering multimedia services over mobile networks, and looking at the evolution and future perspectives for storage technologies, it appears that the introduction of a broadcast/multicast mode in 3G networks could provide great opportunities for the multimedia services business. By its nature, content is aimed at the largest possible audience. With a sufficiently large storage capacity in the user equipment, broadcasting might now be able to provide on-demand and interactive applications because push and store mechanisms make the one-to-many distribution mode could prove to be the most efficient and cost-effective way to provide large audiences with appealing multimedia content.
