Abstract
Reviews some of the features of a ship-to-shore automatic telegraphy system for operation in the 2 MHz to 30 MHz HF band, employing adaptive techniques of frequency management. Methods of synchronous network management and of error detection and correction are described which enable the system to deliver traffic with a high probability of first shot success and a consequent lower probability of interception (LPI). The system is suitable for use with cryptography, if required. Some of the techniques used are capable of adaptation to forms of communication other than telegraphy. The examples used are taken from a naval system developed by Marconi communication systems Limited using industry-standard computing hardware, and currently undergoing sea trials
