Abstract :
Juveniles normally have their own preference in hair style as part of their appearance, especially the bang styles. However, they may not be aware that the bangs will cause unintended consequences of deteriorating vision, unbalanced collarbone, and even worse scoliosis and other diseases. In order to investigate and intervene in this health concern at an earlier stage we conducted extensive vision examinations on students in many elementary schools. During the eye examinations, not only the visions were examined but also questionnaires were issued to students to understand how their daily habits related to the body posture. To discover the causality from vision to scoliosis, information gain and fuzzy model are proposed to find critical factors among candidates such as bang styles, weight, height, BMI, waistline, sleeping hours per day, and the way of carrying schoolbag. Then, data mining techniques are used to extract the causal associations among different factors. Based on the chosen factors and association rules, an intelligent model is proposed to discover the knowledge of students vulnerable to scoliosis from the side effects induced by their bang styles. Analytical results from over 3,500 elementary school students are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. Comparisons between before and after adjustment on subjects´ visions are also presented to illustrate the continuing research on this work.
