Abstract
Due to advancement in telecommunication sector and integration of different networks for reliable service to mobile users, the analysis of mobile station battery energy consumption have become an important issue. In heterogeneous networks the need for vertical handoff is initiated for convenience rather than connectivity reasons. In this paper, when a mobile station switches among different networks, the mobile station´s transition probabilities during vertical handoff are taken into consideration. Transition probability matrices have been developed using received signal strength for both data and voice communication in cellular and wireless local area networks. A Markov process for mobile station´s long-term energy consumption analysis has been developed.
