Abstract
The performance of a novel direct conversion radio for GSM tri-band and GPRS applications is evaluated. An overview of the architecture is presented along with the results of an analysis of the radio performance. The advantages of the architecture are discussed, particularly with respect to the frequency plan and DC offset reduction. Measured receiver performance is presented for sensitivity in GSM and DCS1800 bands, blocking, AM detection, and adjacent and co-channel interference performance. Measured performance of the novel transmitter is also presented. Measured performance of a fractional-N synthesizer is presented for phase noise and lock time, demonstrating that it is suitable for GPRS applications
