Abstract :
Distribution network operators (DNOs) are required to inspect, maintain and manage large numbers of geographically dispersed overhead line assets. The effective asset management of overhead lines is essential in order to meet safety, statutory, operational and regulatory requirements. This paper illustrates CE Electric UK´s (one of the UK DNOs) approach to the refurbishment of 132 kV steel tower overhead lines. The paper describes how CE Electric UK and EA Technology have worked together to successfully implement an innovative helicopter inspection and condition assessment of over 400 132 kV steel tower overhead lines. Applying condition based risk management (CBRM) techniques has enabled CE Electric UK to refine its asset replacement strategy for tower lines. The paper explores the end to end process followed in adopting an innovative inspection technique that meets the needs of CE Electric UK. It illustrates the challenges facing a DNO whose core interest lies in the asset management of a complex, aging asset base
