Knowledge based systems with embedded simulation components

Proposes a methodology for implementing knowledge based systems (KBS) which have embedded discrete event simulation (DES) capabilities. The paper begins with a brief review of some of the problems encountered when implementing non-trivial KBS and simulation modelling tools. The integration of KBS and simulation technologies is then proposed as a solution to some of these problems. A methodology for achieving this integration is presented and the paper concludes with two case studies which have investigated the potential for exploiting KBS and simulation technologies within the manufacturing environment
