In the Fall of 1987, the College of Engineering at Clemson University launched a proactive peer mentoring program for all incoming African American engineering majors, the Program for Engineering Enrichment and Retention (PEER). A description of the program and its results are used to demonstrate the significant impact of proactive mentoring on retention of these students
