Abstract
Partial discharges are the main cause of breakdown in insulation materials. Therefore location of partial discharges is important for the quality control of HV cables. This paper discusses the noise and disturbances affecting PD measurements and presents some digital filter techniques to suppress these disturbances. Three of them have been implemented in PDLOC, a commercialized digital system for the location of PD in HV cables. Test results show that disturbances up to five times as large as the second PD pulse can be successfully suppressed. The maximum location error with use of filters is in the same order as without filtering
