Abstract :
The time-division duplex synchronous code-division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) system is unique among all the third generation (3G) standards under development, and has a number of advantages over other CDMA systems. However, a potential drawback is the need for uplink synchronization and the sensitivity of system performance to time misalignment. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between synchronization operation and the correlation properties of the spreading codes used in this standard and show that they drive the requirement for strict uplink synchronization. Compared to the sensitivity to time misalignment, the performance loss due to time delay estimation errors of the main path is relatively small. To validate the analytical results, a realistic simulation of the TD-SCDMA standard is carried out.
