Abstract :
Finite element analysis on composite corrugated plates subjected to dynamic axial crushing has been carried out. Woven roving [±45] glass and jute/ epoxy materials were used for the analysis. Plates were of 100 mm approximate length and 60 mm width. Triangular, rectangular and sinusoidal corrugation types were investigated. Effect of the type of corrugation, material used and number of layers on the load-displacement relations were drawn and compared. Initial and mean failure load for the tested corrugated plates were obtained from the analysis and compared. Energy absorption was calculated from the load-displacement graphs. The specific energy absorption has been plotted for each case. Failure mode for the tested specimens also has been investigated. Results obtained from this study show that the corrugation type has a significant influence on the mean crushing load and the energy absorption of the corrugated plates under lateral loading. Failure mechanism also influenced by the type of corrugation and material used. It has been found that the crushing load and the energy absorption of the glass epoxy corrugated plates are slightly higher than jute/ epoxy corrugated plates for all the corrugation types tested.
