Abstract :
Brantley, et al (1982) recently presented an on-line procedure for identification of overdamped second order plus deadtime processes. In this paper we compare the advantages and disadvantages of their method with an on-line procedure which uses the Luus-Jaakola (LJ) Optimization technique (1973, 1981). The comparison is made in terms of ease of programming, execution times, and the reliability of results obtained with different initial starting values of the process parameters. The results of the on-line procedure which utilized the LJ Optimization technique are not as sensitive to starting values as the Brantley et al (1982) procedure. Examples of the application of the two techniques are discussed in this paper, including the potential application of the technique in the determination of optimal tuning constants of digital controllers.
