Abstract :
In the Mobile Radiocommunications Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens we have developed an integrated system that allows a person with special needs (quadriplegic person) to easily extend his capabilities. The mobility problems of a person with special needs are responsible for his lack of efficiency in optimizing his environment in a desired way. Our system alters that lack of efficiency, with the take over of the control of a number of electrical devices at a low-level and expectation-at a high level-of a very small contribution from the person with special needs in that control. The person´s with special needs benefits are quite obvious, since he gains a large amount of autonomy, with the potential of tele-education and teleworking, The combination of specially developed software, installed on a common PC, with special electromechanical sensors, has resulted in an inexpensive system with a flexible structure, that can be adapted to a large variety of mobility problems and cover those cases.
